Assessment

Formative Assessment

Formative assessment refers to a wide variety of methods that teachers use to conduct in-process evaluations of student comprehension, learning needs, and academic progress during a lesson, unit, or course. Formative assessments help teachers identify concepts that students are struggling to understand, skills they are having difficulty acquiring, or learning targets they have not yet achieved so that adjustments can be made.

The general goal of formative assessment is to collect detailed information that can be used to improve instruction and student learning while it’s happening. This information is largely used when reporting to parents or at student-teacher conferences.
This can be in the form of lesson plenaries, observations, live marking of tasks, discussions between students and the teachers etc.

Summative Assessment

Summative assessments are used to evaluate student learning progress and achievement at the conclusion of a specific instructional period—usually at the end of a project, unit, semester, program, or school year. This usually takes the form of presentations, tests and exams.

At the end of each year, students from Year 4 to Year 9 take the Cambridge Progression Tests in English, Mathematics and Science. These tests provide valuable information about the effectiveness of the teaching at Skt Josef's International School and are more about us rather than the student. These tests usually do not count towards students report grades.

Exams that do count are the IGCSE exams that students sit during the two year program  in Year 10 and Year 11. The results from these assessments are used when applying to high school, IB courses, or danish gymnasiums.

Reports

Reports provide parents with information about either/both a student’s effort, and/or academic performance.

Year 1- Year 2

Students only receive a grade for their effort based on the descriptors below.

Year 3-Year 6
In addition to a grade for effort, students now receive an indicator stating whether they are working towards their Age Related Expectations (AREs), achieving AREs or working beoynd AREs.

Year 7-11
Students continue to receive a grade based on their effort, but will also receive an academic grade indicating their achievement.
